If Any of You Lack Wisdom... TJEd Parents on the Path of Wisdom
Angela Baker
Most of us were drawn to TJEd because we love the principles it teaches. We feel strongly that we need to be raising leaders and that our children have a vital role to play in the future of our nation and the world. However, if we are not careful, TJEd can become its own conveyor belt, with us wanting the one, right, “step-by-step” plan to follow that guarantees success for every child. Sometimes we try to implement a certain principle because “that’s what the book said,” rather than trying to prayerfully determine what is best for our children at that time. How can we cut through the confusion we sometimes feel to live in the clarity of truth—truth about education, about family, about roles, about what is most important day-to-day? We can find that truth walking what Angela Baker calls “The Path of Wisdom.” The Prophet Joseph Smith followed this path repeatedly and each time received light and truth. Learning to consistently walk this path is vital to the education of every Latter-day Saint, whether parent or child. It is particularly important for families following a “non-traditional” schooling path like Leadership Education. The path is profoundly simple and perhaps already familiar, but it has the capacity to personally lead us out of the confusion and into light and truth. Explore this path with Angela and discover just how much it applies to the work of educating and raising your children in the TJEd approach.

7 Keys of Great Teaching
Angela Baker
These keys work! Wherever there is great teaching you will find students who are excited about their education. What you won’t find are resistant, apathetic students with glazed eyes. The fruit of great teaching is always students who dig in and study because they want to. And in the process these students discover and develop their God-given greatness. This is what great teaching does! The challenge for most of us is to reprogram our educational belief system and replace conveyor belt methods with these powerful keys. Come and learn what these keys are, how they work, and how you can use them in your home. Make your home a place of great teaching and watch the fruit grow.

Power of Classics in Education
Angela Baker
Are you looking for a curriculum that will inspire your children? One that both you and the children love? One that causes the children to beg for more? Then you need to discover the power of classics. Classics are rich in human experience and from them “…we can find what we ought to be, we can find our highest selves”(Arthur Henry King). Classics inspire every possible virtue from courage to persistence from faith to kindness and understanding. This class is packed with stories that show the power of classics and how you can use them to inspire and teach your children to find and become their best selves.

The Eighth Key of Great Teaching
Angela Baker
Do you worry about the progress your children don’t seem to be making? Are you feeling stressed juggling so many seemingly competing demands? Are you afraid you’re not “doing it right?” For most of us, the TJ Ed path is new and unfamiliar. In our uncertainty, fear and stress will be unwelcome traveling companions, but we don’t have to link arms and allow them to lead our way. With the Eighth Key and its Three Companion Principles (first introduced by Dr. Oliver DeMille in 2007), we can walk this path secure in the Lord making our homes peaceful and secure refuges from the confusion of the world.

Never has there been a more confusing time to raise children. The world blares at us a cacophony of competing voices. A Joyful Mother
Angela Baker
“Mom, you’re always stressed.” I stopped frantically chopping vegetables and looked across the counter at my 13-year-old daughter. “I’m not stressed, at least not always,” I replied. But her comment had pierced my reality. Was I stressed more often than not? This was a turning point for me. Are you feeling stressed and burned out? Would you like to put the JOY back into your mothering and teaching? YOU CAN! Stress is just a symptom—a misperception. It means we are not seeing things quite right. Mothering and homeschooling can be joyful. Come discover how to get the JOY back when you’ve lost it (and we all lose it from time to time). Take home “The 7 Lenses for Finding Joy” and let joy be the legacy you pass on to your children.

Melissa Coombs and Denise Ward
You’ve made the decision to homeschool, yet you are thinking: “Can I really be a full-time Mom, teacher, and wife, hold a calling in the church, get the laundry, cooking and cleaning done, and still feel like I have it all together?” While that may be a pretty tall order, you can have serenity amid chaos—knowing that you have done your best and made good choices. We can help you get there. With 17 kids and 18 years of homeschooling experience between us, we have learned a thing or two. We want to share with you our practical tips to help your home run a little more smoothly, invite the Spirit into your homeschool, and even have little fun along the way.

Adult Phases of TJEd
Dr. Julie Earley
Believe it or not, adults pursing a leadership education must go through the very same phases of learning that children go through. Do they look the same? Not exactly. This leaves many parents confused about where they are in the phases of learning. Understanding the adult phases is key in mentoring your children from core phase through scholar phase. More importantly, in order to be prepared to achieve your life mission you must go through all the phases of learning. This is the concept of "you, not them" raw and unplugged.

The Power of an Educated Woman
Dr. Julie Earley
Brigham Young said, “If I had a choice of educating my daughters or my sons . . . I would choose to educate my daughters.” In our world today there is much confusion as to what an educated woman looks like. The scriptures and modern prophets make it very clear. Women have a great power—that power is magnified when women seek a great education.

Vendor Workshop: Teaching Your Child to Read Using the Book of Mormon
Camille Funk
Research shows that children are most receptive to learning between the ages of two and six. Learning to Read Using the Book of Mormon takes that early zest for learning and combines it with the scriptures and the educational tools needed to teach children how to read. Each chapter of the Book of Mormon has been carefully outlined to reinforce the development of phonological skills, the development of sight (memorization) words, and vocabulary development. This vendor workshop will go through the tools and ideology in teaching your child to read using the Book of Mormon.

The Way You See Government is the Way You See Education
Dr. Andrew Groft
Although many of us are involved in political parties as a way to help move the cause of liberty and agency, we all know that political parties are not the whole answer. Likewise, most members of the church associate with at least one school as a means of furthering education and knowledge, but a school, like a political party, is only a tool. So which governmental forms align with which educational forms? And why should every parent be a homeschooler in the next thirty years.

Teacher of the Year
Dr. Andrew Groft
Great teachers know a few great secrets. It's true. And the Dads who discover these secrets early are bound to be nominated for Teacher of the Year. Learn from a Public School teacher/professor who homeschools what Dads can do to make any school work. Learn the most common misunderstandings of the TJEd model, and how Dads can rethink their approach to find their true place in the home. If you are a Father (or a Mother who's married to a Father) you'd be wise to face the realities of the different nature of the challenges ahead, and to do everything in your power to equip your kids for the new world they must brave.

How do you choose what’s right for your child(ren)? This class will help you through the maze of terminology and volumes of information a home school parent needs to understand, in a clear, concise, non-biased way. Let Marty Huie, a 9-year-veteran homeschool mom of four, help navigate you through this unfamiliar territory as you strive to determine which approach may be right for your family’s needs.

Dan Hunter
Vendor Workshop: Living History
Dan Hunter
There was a time when history ruled the world. Sages, scientists, generals, artists, kings and merchants used history as the central textbook, and made decisions based on the lessons of the past. Investors looked to the past for guidance, as did statesmen and artisans. Stories are the foundation of history, the foundation upon which all societies base their view of the world and with which they face and choose the future, and God is the central figure. No honest reader of history can doubt that the great men and women of history were influenced by their religions, beliefs and relationships with God. The purpose of Living History is to provide parents a history text in story form (the method used by the Savior in His teachings) from which to teach their children, blending the secular and religious together, and putting God back into history. Students come to a better understand their world and their place in it when history is taught in this format.
Thursday 2:45- 3:45 PM
How Did the Native Americans Get Here?
Dan Hunter
Native Americans are people of mixed blood and origin. Chiefly they are Lamanites, with some remnants of Nephites who were not destroyed. They are of the House of Israel for Lehi was from the tribe of Manasseh, Ishmael from Ephraim, and Mulek from Judah. It is also possible that remnants of the Jaredites survived. There were groups of Orientals, Scandinavians, and archeological indications that an unspecified number of groups made their way to the New World. However, the dominant blood lineage is that of Israel, for the Indians are repeatedly called Lamanites in the revelations, and are promised that in due time they “shall blossom as the rose.” (D&C 49:24)

American History and Prophecy, Part 1
Dr. Glenn Kimber
Just about every home schooling family have received spiritual confirmation that they are supposed to be teaching their children, and preparing them for very special missions. Have you ever wondered why it is that the same families have a deep abiding love for America and our Founding Fathers? Could it be that many of these children have a very special part in the future of America? In his presentation of America in History and Prophecy, Dr. Kimber will share the vision of the American Founders when they talked about the time that the Lord would raise up a Manifest Destiny generation, in order to propel America into its destined path. This lecture is a must for all home schooling parents who wish to understand many of the reasons that they were inspired to train up their children in a home schooling or private schooling environment.

Preparing for Cities of Zion, Part 2
Dr. Glenn Kimber
In 1969 Alvin R. Dyer was ordained an apostle by Pres. David O. McKay, and was set apart as a counselor to the first presidency. In his blessing he was given the assignment to be the "watchman of the consecrated lands of Missouri." He was assigned by President McKay to collect all the information he could pertaining to the "cities of Zion" that were to dot North and South America before the Savior's return. Where are these cities? Where will they be built, and what will they be like? Why will there be no chapels and no schools? Dr. Kimber will share with the youth this fascinating information received from President Dyer.

Real Math in TJEd
Elizabeth Merrell
Adequate preparation in mathematics opens doors for success, a benefit that every homeschooling parent aims to provide for their children. The primary question remains-- how? How do leadership education and the 7 Keys of Great Teaching apply to math? Elizabeth Merrell will show us how to interact with our students to stimulate essential learning in both the broader field of mathematics and the specific task of arithmetic. We will also gain a perspective of varying methods to decide which may fit our time frame, our family situation and our goals in order to attain excellent education regardless of our own mathematical abilities.

Parenting Mini-Seminar Part 1: The Foundation for Effective Parenting
Nicholeen Peck
The Family is the Learning Place. Then why do most parents feel like they are drowning in fights, attitude problems, whining, and disobedience? Before you can teach children how to govern themselves, you must create a system of government in your home. This class is designed to identify the problems your family system might be having and correct them, or to help you find the system your family will thrive with. Family Councils don’t work for many families; why? Family Organization makes all the difference. The concepts presented in this class make the actual parenting, or Teaching Self Government, work
Thursday 1:30 - 2:30 PM
Parenting Mini-Seminar Part 2: Building Good Family Government
Nicholeen Peck
If we are constantly battling our children at home, how can we create an environment to build leaders? The most inspiring of all lessons taught in the home is that of a good parent/child relationship. There are no tricks to achieving children that govern themselves, while happily and willingly obeying the counsel of their parents. A working family government and atmosphere of acceptance, love and the spirit turns the heart of a child to his/her parents. Don’t just parent your children; teach them the skills they need to govern themselves.
Thursday 2:45- 3:45 PM
Parenting Mini-Seminar Part 3: Teaching Self Government
Nicholeen Peck
There was a time when people were defined by the status of their character. People either had a degree of good character or didn't have any character. Improving one's character through study of principles was of high importance to those who had vision for the future. Samuel Smiles spoke of leaders with character: "Men of genuine excellence, in every station of life…command the spontaneous homage of mankind. It is natural to believe in such men, to have confidence in them, and to imitate them. All that is good in the world is upheld by them, and without their presence in it, the world would not be worth living in." In our current society character is under attack, and most people have no idea because noticing a person's character isn't common anymore. We will explore how being a "character mentor" is an essential part of building the Lord’s future leaders, and learn different character elements that should be taught during each phase of learning.

Questions, Questions: Teaching with the Socratic Method
Robin Schneider
Parents sometimes feel bombarded with questions. This is not surprising, since asking questions is one of the ways that children learn about the world. Wouldn't it be nice if children could answer their own questions? Well, they can, with your help. The Socratic Method uses focused questions to help your child move from what he already knows to what he wants to know. This workshop explains the theory behind the Socratic Method, gives a demonstration, then allows you to practice what you have learned.

Teaching Science: The Three Pillars and the Scientific Method
Robin Schneider
Are you afraid to teach science? Learn how to give your children a proper science education, one containing three distinct pillars: learning facts, doing experiments, and mastering science skills. Whether you're an unschooler or use a pre-packaged curriculum (or some approach in-between), this workshop will show you how to give your children a well-rounded science education. You’ll also learn how to teach your children the Scientific Method incrementally, rather than all at once. As they learn the skills involved gently and gradually, they'll not only come to understand the scientific method better than their peers, but will also make it part of their daily life.

Rodney K. Smith
Vendor Workshop: Southern Virginia University
President Rodney K. Smith, Southern Virginia University
As worldliness encroaches on us from every direction, choosing the right college has become a very significant issue in the lives of the rising generation. During this presentation, President Smith will draw on his experience of 25-plus years in higher education, and his time as a Bishop in a student ward at a major state University, to help clarify some of the issues that should be considered in prayerfully making a decision from among the many choices available in higher education in the United States today. His presentation will be balanced in an effort to help potential students and their parents understand the advantages and disadvantages associated with the choices that are available. He will also discuss financial aid and related issues and will discuss the history of higher education in the LDS context, as a means of illuminating those choices. At the close of his remarks, President Smith will leave ample time for questions.

Terrible or Terrific? Home Schooling with Toddlers in the Midst
Sasha Takis
This was an actual journal entry written by me, a few years ago, about my now 7-year-old middle child: “He ripped up the other kids' papers, and broke all the new crayons (by scribbling on and then jamming them into the underside of the dining room table). He purposely scribbled on and poked holes in their assignments while they were "thinking" just to get a scream out of them. He nearly cut his tongue off with the scissors. He ripped pages out of the scriptures, climbed on the table and walked all over everything, slammed the French doors over and over, and threw anything he could get his hands on at the boys while they were working. He took 2 bites out of each apple in the kitchen (3 boxes waiting to be canned). This was all in just 45 minutes today!!!” Having toddlers in the house wasn’t a “problem” until my third child came along and my older children began more formal studies. I didn’t want to consider any of my children to be a problem, especially at such tender ages. Homeschooling was supposed to bring us together, not tear us apart! There had to be a way to homeschool the older children without it being at the expense of the younger ones. And there had to be a way to include the younger ones, without it being at the expense of the older ones. Now, a few more children later (still in the toddler stage), we’ve come a long way and figured some things out. I’m here to share my experience and ideas with you, to make those terrible twos terrific.

Come, Follow Me – Homeschooling in the Footsteps of the Savior
Sasha Takis
"...what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am." (3 Nephi 27:27) Jesus Christ: second to his atoning sacrifice and resurrection was His mission to teach. Though the world doesn't always agree on the divinity of Jesus Christ, there's been no disputing His effectiveness as a teacher. Because we are to follow His example, we have been given many tools and patterns to help us. As we study not just Christ's teachings, but also the way in which He taught them, we will become better at teaching our own children everything they need to know. The ministry of Jesus Christ was inviting, not demanding. Love, understanding, and eternal perspective underlined everything He did. The Savior has invited us to follow His path, even and especially in our own ministry as homeschooling parents. Taking His example, we'll learn how to extend a similar invitation to our children as we walk the path together.

Bringing the Scriptures into Every School Subject (part 1)
Sasha Takis
In our search for the best math program, the greatest grasp of grammar, the most appropriate social situations, effective methods and curriculum, we often fail to search where the searching matters. As conscientious parents our educational goals for our children call for learning as much as possible to give them an advantage. The scriptures are the advantage! There were no miracles or martyrs in the publishing of a textbook! Neither are there any wholly secular subjects. The scriptures aren't just for use in the compartmentalized boxes of Sunday School and Family Home Evening. Everything is one eternal round and all knowledge belongs to and originates with the gospel of Jesus Christ. This practical and hands-on class will show you how God's plan, His word, and His spirit can be included, applied, and realized no matter what subject(s) your children are studying. Please bring your scriptures.

Love of Learning in Our Home
Gregory van Duyse
Over the past few years, the van Duyse family has learned that "Love of Learning" looks easy, but it sure can be daunting to implement this important environment in your home! At first our family struggled…how DO you inspire your children to learn what they love, and love what they learn? The conveyor belt sure looks tempting in December! (At least everything would be structured!) Finally, we decided: let’s create a structure where our children can CHOOSE to participate in various activities that will inspire them to gain basic literacy (reading, writing and counting) through classics, and prepare them for a rich and productive Scholar Phase. Well, it worked, and our children loved it! Inside the scope of the Love of Learning phase, we have created three different programs (with challenges, games and rewards) to cover the Love of Reading, the Love of Writing, and the Love of Counting. Come and let us share with you what we are doing, why we are doing it, and the results we have seen thus far. Don’t worry…Love of Learning can be fun, relaxing and rewarding for both mother and child.

Hinckley suggested “4 Simple Things to Help Our Families and Our Nation.” One of the prophet’s “4 Simple Things” was to “read good books together.” Can reading together really make that much difference to our families? And the nation? Should you still read to your children even after they can read to themselves? With all of the other important subjects to cover during the day, should reading together really get a top-priority spot? Yes, yes, yes, and YES! Reading together can not only help your children academically, it can be a powerful force for family strength and unity. You’ll leave this class motivated to either begin this great practice, or, continue it with renewed vigor. You’ll also leave armed with book suggestions that can make the journey more exciting! Come learn how to make this important subject the favorite part of your homeschool!

Vendor Workshop: Computerized Educational Assessments and Interventions from Reading Success Lab
Jeremy Wise
The Reading Success Lab computerized system has both assessment and intervention capability. The Assessments are used to identify different learning problems, pinpoint skill weaknesses and measure progress in basic skills acquisition over time. The intervention exercises improve reading and math skills by promoting fast and accurate sight recognition of words and math facts. The system is an open system allowing the home educator to develop his/her own custom materials for use with this system.

You won’t want to miss this physics magic show. But unlike a regular magic show, Dr. Wright will explain why it all works. There will be clouds of smoke, cinder blocks, sledge hammers, flying eggs and toilet paper. It’s spinning, splatting, squeaking, bouncing and a whole lot more. You may have the chance to pull the table cloth out from underneath the dishes, or be vacuum packed. Come enjoy physics as you have never seen it!

Making Science Fun
Dr. David Wright
Science is much more enjoyable when it is experienced and not just talked about. We will try several experiments, do a number of demonstrations that can be done with common everyday household items, and discuss field trips and other ideas to put action into Science.

Science and Religion (Youth / Adult)
Dr. David Wright
We’ll discuss everything from the role of faith in science to the infinite nature of the universe. From Moses to Einstein, we’ll examine the how and why of our existence. We’ll also use magnets, raw eggs, and bicycle wheels along the way to help us understand this relationship between science and religion. Parents are also invited to attend this class.

Panel Discussions
Panel Discussion: What Does TJEd Look Like in Your Home?
Michelle Carbee, Melissa Orton, Jamie Anderson
Thomas Jefferson Education is not a curriculum per se. Nor is it another cookie-cutter, conveyor belt, one-size-fits-all approach. It is a philosophy that describes principles that can be applied to many different types of educational settings. That being said, it is still useful to see how other families do TJEd, as it can motivate us and suggest ideas that may work with our own situations. This class will highlight three different families, and the way that TJEd works in their homes.
TJEd Wednesday 3:30 - 4:30 PM

If you are a new homeschooler (or even just considering it), we know that you have a million questions! Here’s the place to find your answers! Our panel of veteran homeschool moms will be sharing their experiences in a variety of areas, including logistical (“how do I teach my kids and get the laundry done?”), motivational (“what do I do when my child doesn’t want to learn?”), spiritual (“How can I use the scriptures in my homeschool?”), and much, much more!

Melissa Coombs, Sherry Veach, Denise Ward, Dana Wood
Having children across a wide age span brings its own set of unique challenges. Home educating those same children can be even more challenging! If you feel pulled in many different directions as you try to teach high school math, middle school history, and beginning phonics all in the same morning (while you are nursing a baby), this is the panel discussion for you! Our panelists collectively have ___ children ranging in age from baby to high school senior (or beyond). They will address the topics of most concern to families in this situation, including tips on how to get your family to work together to make homeschooling work for everyone!

Panel Discussion: Powerful Homeschool Dads
Andrew Behnke, Shawn Coombs, John Frary, Gregory van Duyse
Homeschool isn’t just something that happens from 9- 3 in your home—it changes the way the family lives and the roles that the parents play in their children’s lives. Adding “being an effective homeschool dad” to a father’s other responsibilities can be challenging. Our panelist fathers will give their perspective on the role of a successful homeschool dad. They will discuss the different ways to positively and powerfully impact your family’s homeschool, while still maintaining your other important responsibilities (career, callings, etc.).
Friday 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Panel Discussion: Navigating the College Admissions Channels (Youth / Adult)
Zach Foxley, Karen Thomas, Kyla Thomas, Cecelia Ward, Rebecca Watson
Moving from high school to college is a huge transition, and one that requires a lot of planning and preparation. You probably have a lot of questions: “When should I start preparing?” “How do I best prepare?” and even “WHY should I prepare?” Our panelists range from students preparing for college now, to students who have successfully entered college and the parents who have helped them get there! They will answer the most important questions facing you, including “What classes do I need to take?,” “How do I prepare a transcript or portfolio?,” “What about the SAT/ACT?,” and more. This class is a must for every homeschool student because as we know, “if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear.” (D&C 38:30) Parents are also invited to attend this class.

Panel Discussion: What Does Your Home School Look Like?
Cherie Frary, Julie Hansen, Cynthia Olson, Lindsey Forero
One of the most popular questions that comes up when homeschoolers get together is "What did your family do today?" We seem to be very curious about how other families structure their day, how they do science, when they fit in music lessons, and in general, how other families "do school!" Our panelists will address topics including: typical daily schedules, organizing both school and home, and balancing school and life while trying to keep everyone sane in the process! Short video clips of a typical day in the lives of real homeschooling families will be shown.
